KPerak Kidz is a primary school ICT Awareness Programme targeted at the rural and Orang Asli primary school children in Perak. This series of 7-days-and-6-nights camps kicked off its first camp on 6 September 2007 and will end on 25 November 2007. This camp is an initiative of KPerak INC Corporation and is carried out by Warisan Global Sdn Bhd together with the assistance from the Perak State Department of Education, Orang Asli Affairs Department and also the Perak Foundation.
The KPerak Kidz camp consists of six camps planned for 2007 that introduced basic computer and technology skills, self-development and plenty of projects and activities to 70 primary schools (46 from the Orang Asli primary schools and 24 from the rural primary schools).
Twelve schools (approximately eight Orang Asli primary schools and four rural primary schools) from each of the six districts - Kinta, Kuala Kangsar, Hilir Perak, Hulu Perak, Batang Padang and Perak Tengah, were chosen for each camp whereby each school nominated six (6) students from Year 4,5 and 6 along with two teachers each to join this camp.
The objectives of this camp are to encourage and expose the participants to the wonders of ICT, encourage the usage of computers and ICT, to provide them with the fundamental skills needed in the practice of ICT and also to incorporate the sense of accountability in ICT usage. There, the children will be lead by trainers through assignments, group discussions, hands-on projects and role plays.
During the camps, the students were exposed to many types of computer applications based on open source software such as OpenOffice.org suite applications like OpenOffice.org Writer, OpenOffice.org Calc and OpenOffice.org Draw.
These children will then return to their respective schools to set up ICT clubs, share their knowledge with one another through their activities and also connect to the other participating schools through an online portal.
The first camp was held at the Rakan Muda Complex, Kampar on 6 September 2007 and ended on 12 September 2007 and was the first project for the KPerak Infomediaries after their first training programme. This group of KPerak Informediaries trained as ‘ICT missionaries’ cum community entrepreneurs have commenced their own start ups. The remaining five camps were held in Pusat Latihan UiTM, Kg Gajah, Kem Dato’ Sago, Kg Gajah and Pusat Latihan KEMAS, Sg Siput.
In this KPerak Kidz Camp, four groups of KPerak Infomediaries - Wired Bliss Network, C2IT (Centre for Community and IT), Pure IT Network and Start Tech Enterprise along with facilitators were mentored by Warisan Global to carry out the ICT awareness camps for the rural and Orang Asli primary school children.
This closing ceremony marks the end of the six camps which were held throughout the past three months where close to 500 students from over 70 schools in Perak have participated and made this program a tremendous success. This program has also gained sizeable media coverage where it has been featured in both major local newspapers and also by a local television network.
