About Perak

Perak refers to as ‘silver’ in Malay. The name derived from the silvery colour of tin, which was a local commodity since the 1890’s. Perak has the richest alluvial deposits of tin in the world during that particular time. It is among the jewels attached to the crown of the British Empire.

However, some say that the name also comes from the ‘glimmer of fish in the water’ that sparkled like silver. Others believe that it was named after Bendahara Tun Perak of the Malacca Sultanate.

The Arab’s honourific of the state is ‘Darul Ridzuan’ or the ‘Land of Grace’.

Ipoh, the state capital of Perak is known historically for its tin mining activities until the drop of tin price, which has severely affected the state economy. The rubber commodity also played a major part in its economic development during the reign of 34 Sultans.

Perak has a constitutional monarchy, with a constitutional hereditary ruler.

Kuala Kangsar is the ‘Royal Capital’ of Perak, where the palace of the Sultan of Perak is located.
